Travelling to the Assembly Hall

A short walk from Walthamstow Central Station (National Rail from Liverpool St or Victoria Line Underground) - walk north on Hoe Street past the cinema, turn right at the traffic lights onto Forest Rd, look out for the Town Hall and Assembly Hall on your left.

Buses 275 (from Walthamstow Central to Barkingside) or 123 (from Wood Green via Blackhorse Road to Ilford) both pass the Assembly Hall.

Routes 34, 97, 212, 215 and 357 also pass nearby.

There is ample parking at the Assembly Hall on concert evenings. Pay and display operates at weekends.

Walthamstow Assembly Hall is an imposing Art Deco building forming part of the Town Hall complex on Forest Road. Designed by PD Hepworth, it was completed in 1942.

Pevsner comments:   ‘.. .. stone-faced and in the Swedish style of c 1925 which became so popular in England amongst those who were not satisfied to be imitatively Neo-Georgian nor wanted to go modern in earnest.’

Apparently the Assembly Hall was originally to be matched by a Law Court to the other side of the Town Hall.  Its superb acoustics also make it one of the UK's top venues for recording classical music.
